HELLO EVERYONE (Monday, February 26, 2018)
The 2018 Girls Top 60 Workout press release is posted on the link to the top left. This event will be held at Heritage Christian High School on Sunday, March 4th, 2018. There is an $8.00 admission fee at the door. The event starts at 1:00 p.m.
Congratulations to the four girls IHSAA State Champions that were crowned on Saturday, February 24th — Warren Central-AAAA, Northwestern-AAA, Central Noble-AA and Marquette Catholic-A. In my nearly 25 years with Hoosier Basketball Magazine, I can never remember so many teams with underclass players as team leaders among the state finalists. Kyra Whitker of runner-up Greensburg was the only SENIOR double-figure point producer at the 2018 Girls State Finals.
This past year (2017) has been difficult with the passing of Garry Donna. We are approaching the one year anniversary of his death on March 5th. With this season Hoosier Basketball Magazine offered two covers— a traditional cover that recognized 12 senior boys and 12 senior girls as well as a NOSTALGIA cover that has a throw-back style picture of Romeo Langford as a replica photo of the 1970-71 edition that featured Peru’s John Garrett. This cover also has Garry Donna’s photo as a feature image on the cover to honor Garry.
The 48th annual Hoosier Basketball Magazine was available at many games this past season including five locations on Friday, February 23rd. Chuck DeMoss was at undefeated South Bend Riley as they surged past Glenn after trailing at halftime. Larry Jerrell was at Bloomington North to see Romeo Langford’s final regular season game as he pursues 3000 career points. Jim Anderson was at AA defending state champion Frankton as they edged Sheridan 56-54. Dale Lawrence was at the Manual doubleheader that saw Gary Roosevelt nip Manual 64-62 after Howe defeated Gary 21st Century in the first game. I was at Westview and saw the Warriors get out to an early lead over Concord behind the outstanding play of junior Elijah Hales (13 points in the first quarter). Westview won going away.
I was at the Purdue senior night game vs. Minnesota on Sunday, February 25th. Senior Dakota Mathias was impressive with a career high 25 points including seven three pointers. Fellow seniors PJ Thompson (pictured on the yellow traditional cover of HBM) and Vincent Edwards (pictured on the red nostalgia cover of HBM) each knocked down three point shots in their final games at Mackey Arena. Issac Haas finished his regular season career at Purdue with 13 points.
